THE FUTURE OF ENGLISH

Our Anglo-Saxon forebears would have been surprised to see the development of
these new languages, which had evolved from the Latin they knew. They would have
witnessed the emergence of Old French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, and Romanian, among
others. They would have seen the rise of English as a dominant language in Britain, as well as
the spread of Germanic languages throughout northern Europe.
