IDIOMS, PHRASEOLOGICAL UNITS AND FORMULAIC EXPRESSIONS

Idiom is a phrase or expression whose total meaning differs from the meaning of the individual words. For example, to blow one's top (get angry) and behind the eight ball (in trouble) are English- language idioms. Idioms come from language and generally cannot be translated literally. Foreign language speakers must learn them just as they would learn vocabulary words. This article defines idioms, phraseological units and formulaic expressions. Moreover, usage of them and examples were given in this paper

SEMANTIC CHARACTERISTICS AND STRUCTURAL PECULIARITIES OF SPORT PHRASEOLOGICAL UNITS

The article analyses the semantic features of phraseological units in sport. The purpose of the work is to study the phraseological units of a particular area of usage in sport. The objectives of the study are to identify thematic groups of phraseological units and defining their pragmatic goals in the genre of sports journalism as a kind of spontaneous public speech. Collected material can be used in linguistic and stylistic analysis of texts of various styles and genres. They are mainly considered to be the product of sport commentators’ intelligence. We also write about the importance of the context while translating phraseological units. He claims that depending on the context the translation of the same phraseological units may differ. The author also explains the differences between sport phrases and terms using various sport matches. We come to the conclusion that the above-mentioned methods are very important while translating phraseological units. The importance of phraseological units, namely sport phrases and terms in the communication process relating to sport terminology has been stated in the article as well.

This paper examines the comparative semantics of phraseological units in English and Uzbek. Phraseological units, including idioms, proverbs, and set expressions, play a significant role in both languages and carry deep cultural and linguistic meaning. The study investigates the similarities and differences between the two languages in terms of the meanings and usages of these units. Additionally, the paper explores how cultural, historical, and social factors influence the formation and interpretation of phraseological units in English and Uzbek. Effective strategies for teaching and translating phraseological units between these two languages are also discussed.

Linguo-culturology is a rapidly expanding field at the interface between linguistics, cultural studies, ethno-linguistics and sociolinguistics. It deals with the “deep level” of semantics, and brings into correlation linguistic meanings and the concepts of universal and national cultures. One of the main tasks of linguoculturology is to define culturally important language units. The article deals with the stylistic device of antithesis and its usage and comparative analysis in English and Uzbek Phraseology. Antithesis is a rhetorical device that involves putting two contrasting ideas together to highlight their differences. This contrast can create emphasis, drama, or clarity and is often used to make a point more striking or memorable. The article provides pragmatic aspect by means of the extracts taken by English and Uzbek phraseological units.   In language, antithesis pairs opposites or near-opposites in parallel structures, making the contrast clearer and more impactful.
