TEACHING PRAGMATIC COMPETENCE

Pragmatic competence has become, especially in the last few decades, one of the issues that attracted attention in the field as an essential part of language competence. The realization that having a good command of linguistic knowledge in target language would not be enough to master the language has created the need to investigate the value and effect of pragmatic competence in language education. This work is intended to provide a brief overview of pragmatics and pragmatic competence, the pedagogic significance of pragmatic competence highlighting the relevant theoretical components of pragmatics. For the purposes of my work, relevant literature covering definitions of pragmatics and pragmatic competence and research carried out on pragmatic competence is presented.

NONVERBAL CUES AS PRAGMATIC MARKERS IN INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION

This paper explores the role of nonverbal cues as pragmatic markers in intercultural communication. Nonverbal communication, including gestures, facial expressions, eye contact, proxemics, and paralanguage, often carries pragmatic functions that shape the meaning of verbal messages. In intercultural contexts, such cues may cause misunderstanding due to cultural differences in interpretation. Drawing upon Hall’s theory of high-context and low-context cultures, Goffman’s interactional analysis, and Brown and Levinson’s politeness theory, the study argues that nonverbal cues serve as essential pragmatic markers that either facilitate or hinder communication across cultures. Examples from English, Uzbek, Japanese, and Arab communication traditions illustrate how the same nonverbal behavior may generate different pragmatic meanings. The study concludes that a deeper awareness of nonverbal pragmatic markers can enhance intercultural competence and minimize communication failures.

PRAGMATIC COMPETENCE: DEFINITION, THEORETICAL FOUNDATIONS, AND TEACHABILITY

Pragmatic competence is broadly defined as the ability to use language appropriately within social contexts, encompassing knowledge of what to say, how to say it, when, and to whom (Thomas, 1983). This competence entails a speaker’s sensitivity to social norms, interpersonal roles, power relations, and cultural expectations. As conceptualized by Thomas (1983), pragmatic competence comprises two interrelated dimensions: pragmalinguistics, referring to the linguistic means available for performing communicative acts (e.g., grammatical structures, modal verbs, politeness markers), and sociopragmatics, which involves the understanding of how these linguistic forms are deployed appropriately according to social contexts, such as varying degrees of directness contingent on the interlocutor’s status.

PROBLEMS OF AMBIGUITY DURING LANGUAGE TRANSLATION: A CASE STUDY OF KARAKALPAK AND ENGLISH

This article explores the issue of ambiguity in language translation, focusing on the challenges encountered when translating between Karakalpak and English. Ambiguity, whether lexical, syntactic, semantic, or pragmatic, often leads to misunderstandings and misinterpretations, particularly due to structural differences and cultural nuances between the two languages. CHALLENGES IN TRANSLATING CULTURE-BOUND HUMOUR IN ENGLISH SITCOMS INTO UZBEK

This study investigates the challenges of translating culture-bound humour in English sitcoms into Uzbek, focusing on the linguistic, cultural, and pragmatic factors that influence humour transfer. Sitcom humour often relies on wordplay, idiomatic expressions, cultural references, and socio-political contexts specific to English-speaking audiences. When translated into Uzbek, such humour may lose its intended effect due to differences in cultural background, comedic traditions, and audience expectations. The research examines subtitling and dubbing practices, identifying strategies such as adaptation, substitution, explicitation, and omission used to preserve comedic impact. Special attention is given to culturally loaded jokes, puns, and intertextual references that resist direct translation. By drawing on translation theory and audiovisual translation studies, the paper highlights the role of translator creativity and cultural competence in ensuring humour accessibility. The findings contribute to improving cross-cultural humour translation and enhancing audience engagement with foreign media.

PRAGMATIC COMPETENCE AND CROSS-LINGUISTIC VARIATIONS: CULTURAL INFLUENCE ON LANGUAGE USE

Pragmatics, a fundamental aspect of linguistics, studies language use within context, focusing on how meaning is constructed through interaction. Unlike other fields such as semantics or syntax, which focus on the structure and meaning of words in isolation, pragmatics delves into how language functions in real-life situations. It considers the speaker's intent, the listener's expectations, and the socio-cultural norms that guide communication (Mey, 2001).
