SOCIOLINGUISTICS: THEORETICAL PERSPECTIVES, SOCIAL VARIATION, AND GLOBAL DIVERSITY

Sociolinguistics is the study of the relationship between language and society, investigating how linguistic forms are shaped by social structures and how social identities are expressed through language. This paper provides a theoretical analysis of the discipline, integrating the works of Labov, Wardhaugh and Fuller, Bucholtz and Hall, Deumert, Fought, and Calder. It discusses key domains such as language variation, gender, ethnicity, identity, and multilingualism, with reference to empirical findings and global statistical data. The discussion shows that linguistic variation is not random but socially meaningful, revealing how language functions as both a reflection and a construction of human societies.

O‘ZBEK VA TURK TILLARIDA ERKAK-AYOL MUROJAAT BIRLIKLARI: GENDEROLINGVISTIK VA PRAGMATIK TAHLIL

The article studies the units of address in male and female speech from a gender linguistic perspective using the example of the Uzbek and Turkish languages. Explaining the difference between gender and biological sex, the author shows how society's stereotypical views of masculinity and femininity affect speech behavior. The analysis covers factors such as social status, age, profession, formal and informal situation; features such as the affectionate function of the possessive suffix -im, the abundance of emotional-expressive units in women's speech, and the predominance of professional and vulgar vocabulary in men's speech are comparatively highlighted. Titles and deictics such as "begim", "padişahum", "hazrat momo" in historical sources, euphemistic forms such as "canım", "jonim" in modern speech, and negatively colored insults such as "khumpar", "chyort", "jouvonmarg" are classified semantically and pragmatically. As a result, a complex system of reference units is revealed, which is formed in accordance with gender, social environment, and cultural context; the research demonstrates its relevance for sociolinguistics, pragmatics, and cultural studies

SOCIOLINGUISTIC PROPERTIES OF JARGON TRANSLATION: THE CASE OF SPECIALIZED TERMINOLOGY TRANSFER BETWEEN LANGUAGES

This study examines the sociolinguistic dimensions of translating jargon and specialized terminology between languages with particular attention to the Uzbek-English language pair. The research investigates how sociolinguistic factors—including cultural context, power relationships, and discourse communities—influence the translation process of specialized lexical items. Drawing on theoretical frameworks from translation studies and sociolinguistics, this paper argues that jargon translation extends beyond mere lexical equivalence to encompass sociocultural adaptation. Through analysis of specialized terminology in academic, technical, and professional domains, the study demonstrates that effective jargon translation requires understanding of both source and target sociocultural environments. The findings reveal that translators employ various strategies, including calquing, domestication, and hybridization, when transferring specialized terminology, while negotiating sociolinguistic challenges inherent in cross-cultural communication.

Through sociolinguistic analysis, the mechanisms of communication, self-expression, and differentiation within subcultures are explored. The study addresses interdisciplinary issues at the intersection of linguistics and social analysis, contributing to a deeper understanding of the complex relationship between language and society.

IMPORTANCE OF SOCIOLINGUISTICS IN LANGUAGE ACQUISITION

This research paper is very significant for language teachers because learners may have different personalities, social lives, and ethnicities. Instructors should pay attention to the group of learners and their needs. Educators take into account their family habits, social status, and language levels. Because of their background knowledge and learning habits, they acquire the new skills easily, and their knowledge is better than that of the second group. Social life and the people around us can influence language use and learning context.

ADDITIVE AND SUBTRACTIVE BILINGUALISM IN AN UZBEK ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNER

In multilingual societies, bilingualism represents not only a linguistic phenomenon but also a sociocultural and cognitive process. In the Uzbek context, English has gained significant importance as a global language, yet its relationship with the Uzbek mother tongue varies depending on educational and social factors.

IDIOMS AND PROVERBS IN ENGLISH

Linguo-culturology is a rapidly expanding field at the interface between linguistics, cultural studies, ethno-linguistics and sociolinguistics. It deals with the “deep level” of semantics, and brings into correlation linguistic meanings and the concepts of universal and national cultures. One of the main tasks of linguoculturology is to define culturally important language units. The study of the linguistic literature shows that culture specific units are found in such groups of words as: non-equivalent lexicon, anthroponyms, mytholegemes, phraseological units, paronimia, speech formulas of etiquette, etc.
